Lawyers and whores
Yesterday I replaced my lawyer for incompetence and ineptitude. He was probably a brilliant law student. I am giving him the benefit of the doubt here, but he was a nice guy. No hard feelings. The problem is that when I hire a lawyer I don't want a nice guy. I want a tough son-of-a-bitch who will get in there and win. What I didn't have was a winner.
One of the best quality's in an person, at least from my perspective, is the will to win. It takes toughness, dedication and drive to be a winner. Some people just don't have either the knowledge or the energy or the time for it. Some people's attitude can best be summed up as "if I can't win I won't play".
It is not important to me that I win every time. Well, I take that back, I do want to win. But it is important to me that if I lose I go down fighting. Oh by the way, I did emerge victorious in this particular instance so I guess he wasn't that bad, but it is an attitude thing.
Return my phone calls and explain to me the process. He didn't do this well, which surprised me since he billing me for his time. After all is said and done running a law office is running a business. Most lawyers seem to lose track of that concept. It is a business first and foremost, not some holy calling. Customer service needs to be the focus.
A good lawyer is like a good whore. They're both in the personal service business. They both are being paid a lot of money to pretend I mean more to them than I probably do. When they're on the clock I better be the focus of their attention or at least appear to be. A good lawyer needs to put aside his feelings and represent me to the best of his or her abilities and within the full extent of the law. A good whore does the same. Most importantly, whether I win or lose I'm probably getting f***ed in the end.

First simmer down there fellow sounds like something got you wound up
Love the anology
I also have the same feeling for inept people it is a common problem that so many lawyers seam to have this trait
That all being said I to am in the service industary. I have found that by laying out what people are to expect from me there are fewer fires for me to put out. A few years ago I started taking on bigger projects with this it ment less time for me to waist talking to a client about things they don't understand. If they understood it then they wouldn't need me then would they. I literly would get 10-15 calls a day from people who want me to update them on the project or talk about some portion of it. Even at 5 minutes a piece (which they never are) thats well over an hour of my time wasted. This is time I can spend on their project actually getting things done.
I now tell people that most times I will be unavailable to talk when a pressing matter comes up or any problems that is when they will hear from me. No call means everyhting is going smoothly. This is stated up front before anything is signed. I've found most will repect that and really haven't had many complaints about it.

I understand completely what you mean about how easy it is to get overwhelmed with phone calls from a client. Some people need hand holding more than others. I honestly, try to avoid doing business with people I perceive to be like this by pricing it into the job. I am not one of those people who need excessive hand holding, but I do want updates.
A better approach would have been to explain the process to me in the beginning, I personally like to be giving a time line and an idea of the process. After that you are the expert so go about being the expert. My new lawyer is great and operates more to MY liking. I paid her a retainer and she simply gets the job done and provides me with regular updates.
